Vince Lombardo began to research Islamic religious texts, from the Qur'an to the Sira to the Hadiths, right after 9/11.

He had a big question he wanted answered. Why had this happened? It did not feel like a random act of violence.

At first he just wanted to learn. But soon he began writing. His background includes a scholarly bent from early on, then 30 years in the armed forces. He now lives in a large city, in an area with 4 mosques.

For Vince, it was important to speak out about what he was learning. On the other hand, he did not think it important for his own name to be attached to what he was writing. So he has published articles in many anti-jihad blogs, under more than one nom de plume.

Why include him in this interview series? He's been particularly important for me. When I began writing about Islam, in 2006, I only knew it didn't make sense that millions of Muslims were marching about a cartoon in a small Danish publication, when they weren't marching about the murder of 10,000 Muslims by other Muslims in just one city (Baghdad) in just one year.

Around me, I kept hearing Islam was a religion of peace. But how could members of a religion of peace be burning embassies, and in Canada demanding that ALL Danish products be taken off the shelves because they didn't appreciate what a few other Danes had done? Their prophet, I wrote in one article, would be outraged - this was not the behavior of members of a religion of peace.

Enter Vince Lombardo. He wrote to me about Islam. We wrote back and forth. I published a lot of what he wrote on my site. I learned masses and masses - and what I learned was utterly different from what I heard in the mainstream media. What he wrote made sense with what was happening - but otherwise seemed outrageous.

Why didn't I already know all this, you may ask. After all, the information was already out there. I could have picked up a copy of the Qur'an, or maybe Robert Spencer's Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam.

It just didn't occur to me that there could be such a massive break between the reality of the Islamic religious texts and the non-stop insistence that this was a religion of peace, with the peaceful members utterly offended by an unspeakably offensive cartoon (that most people didn't dare republish, out of fear of Islamic retaliation).

What Vince wrote to me fit with what I saw happening.

But I didn't trust that he could be telling the truth. What he wrote was just too incredible - religious leader massacres tribe that has surrendered, religious leader in his 50's marries 6 year old. Death to infidels and apostates. Slavery. No golden rule. Deliberate deception of people termed infidels.

So I did a little research. Amazing. Everything Vince had written to me was true. When I researched into some specific quotes, I did find different translations. So people might be murdered, slaughtered or killed, depending on the translation. But it was pretty clear that they ended up dead, no matter who was translating.

I appreciated it tremendously that Vince didn't only care about doing and publishing his research. He was reading what was coming out on the web, and generous with his time and energy to write to me - and I am sure to many others.

Educating people happens one person at a time.

There's another reason for including Vince in the line-up of people being interviewed. This isn't a movement of leaders and docile followers. There are thousands (hundreds of thousands? millions?) of people out there eager to do something to get more people to see the reality of Islam, from its religious texts to its history to its current trends. I care to give space to some of those people as well.
