Law and Freedom:
mosque blocker

A LAWYER USES THE LAW
I watched a video of Gavin Boby a couple of months ago. He was presenting, at a large conference, on his unbroken string of successes in blocking building applications for mosques: 14 out of 14.
Now, October 2012, the record is 14 out of 15 - and he's a bit relieved. 100% success? He hadn't counted on winning at all.
A few weeks ago, Gavin contacted me. Would I like to interview him? I have 20 people who've agreed to be interviewed - but I like to be flexible. Anyway, I felt like saying yes, so I did.
A bit of background. Years ago, maybe 15, I almost bought a house within half a block of a mosque. The real estate agent told me it wasn't a good idea. I wouldn't be comfortable. I thought she was nuts. I'd lived across the street from a church, and never was bothered. Why should a mosque be any different? Mosques change the neighborhood, she said, and lower the resale value of homes. Most of all, non-Muslim women especially are made to feel uncomfortable.
All those years ago, another decision was made. It had nothing to do with the mosque. At that time, I put the real estate agent's words down to her being biased for no reason.
I did remember, though, that I once lived in the Greek community in Montreal - and chose to leave within a few months, as the sexual harassment was so unpleasant. So I did know what it was like to feel not at home in a neighborhood.
I've learned a lot in the past 15 years - and now would take the real estate agent's words seriously, not assume she was prejudiced.
Enter Gavin Boby - a lawyer who is doing pro bono work (meaning, free!) to help people in poor neighborhoods block building applications for mosques. For him, it's part of doing his bit to protect people. Many of the people in these neighborhoods are pensioners who are often pressured to leave, and made to feel unwelcome if they stay.
It was quite a while before he started doing this. For almost 10 years, he cared, but it was all talk and no action. Like many people, he couldn't figure out what to do. And now, in less than 2 years - action, achievement, and recognition. And plans to go much further.
Is there anything in Gavin's background that may have made him especially likely to take on what he's doing? Several things, but maybe most that in his mid-teens he began to stand up to kids bullying other kids. He did it though he was sure it would just make the bullies turn on him. But they didn't.
That was 20 years before this strange turn in his life - a challenge he chose to take on. And now he's affectionately known as Gavin Boby, mosque buster.
