AMERICAN INFIDEL

The plan: a popular documentary on the Islamophobia of a small town in America upset over the planned construction of a mosque.

The reality: it's turned into something other than that, something not yet complete.

Why? The facts didn't go with the planned project.

The filmmaker: Eric Allen Bell, probably the best-known recent convert to awareness of the history of Islam and the content of Islamic religious texts.

It isn't that Eric has converted to Islam. In fact, what happened is quite different, It's closer to waking up from a popular trance about Islam - a trance in which people see Islam as a religion of peace (as peace is usually defined in the West) - a trance in which people fear displaying any sign of what could be construed as prejudice against Islam.

Lots else has happened along the way. Like being banned from a very popular left wing blog, for which he'd written loads of articles. Like being named, in several Pakistani newspapers, as the creator of the video on Mohammed's live. Like death threats.


It's been one of the surprise stories of the year: leftist documentary maker finds facts, decides to change his message to fit them, and runs into all kinds of trouble.

What kind of man is he? What made him face the facts, instead of going along with the story he was planning to tell - and according to his backers, had to tell if he wanted to keep the funding?


There's a lot in his boyhood that links with the man who chose to speak out instead of go along.

In a way, Eric's personality in childhood fits totally with the man he has becomes, and with his response to uncovering unexpected truths.
